The cosmetic surgery industry in the UK is massive and currently worth around £3.6 billion. Treatments such as wrinkle relaxing with Botulinum Toxin (commonly known as Botox®️ which is the brand name of the drug, Botulinum toxin type A) and dermal fillers account for 9 out of 10 procedures, with a worth of around £2.75 billion according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). An estimated 7 million injection procedures, including Botulinum toxin were performed in the last year alone, and that number just continues to rise. According to the experts, they’ve seen an influx of younger patients opting for preventative treatments sooner rather than later.

The ASPS say that the number of women in the United States aged between 19 and 34 receiving Botulinum toxin treatments has risen by 41% since 2011. Men seeking out the treatment is also on the rise, with them accounting for 10% of all users and leading Botox for men to now being called “Brotox”

The main influences driving Millennials to seek out Botox injections include TV celebrities, social media and selfies. People within the industry are dubbing it “The Kardashian effect”.

So, how soon is too soon? My advice to patients is to start to treat lines when they begin to stay around. When you frown or smile, the lines develop during the expression, in very young skin they tend to go away once the face is relaxed. These are known as dynamic lines. However, as the skin ages and collagen and elastin begin to break down the lines start to stick around at rest, these are known as static lines, that’s when you can consider getting initial Botox treatments. The deeper the static lines become the harder it is to smooth them.

So for those in their 20s and 30s treating those initial lines with toxin will prevent those lines becoming deeper and staying around. For those in their 30s, with deep lines, or those in their 40s and 50s we aim to give a softening to the wrinkles and a fresher smoother look.

There is no specific age that will benefit everyone, so it all depends on skin type and how you feel in your own skin as to whether you feel you should start having treatment. Whatever you choose to do, always make sure you consult an experienced Medical professional for your treatment.
